How do you dance?

A couple years ago, someone recommended that I try Zouk.  It’s a Brazilian partner dance that blends lambada and a bunch of other stuff.  I started because I wanted to try something new and interact with 3D people.  I thought I was signing up for an exercise class.  I didn’t know that it would be an immersive course in leadership.

Over time, Zouk has rewired my brain and defined the base of how I want to move forward with Happy Eyes. You see, here’s the thing.  I am not a “natural dancer.” It’s not how I express myself.  I have always been very much in my head.  That’s what I love about Zouk.  It gets me out of my head and allows me to have an experience that I would not have otherwise.  The key?  Having the chance to dance with really good leads.  I am one of the newcomers in my group, so all the leads are advanced compared to where I am.  When you dance with a strong lead, you find that you are able to do things you never thought were possible.  Moves that I didn’t know exists and somehow they have me sailing right through them like I am some sort of expert.  It’s beautiful.

What is dance about?  It’s about letting go. Enjoying yourself.  Getting yourself into a state of flow.  Letting everything else fall away until you are solidly in the moment.  Stepping to the beat of the music, listening to your partner, forgetting about everything outside of the dance room for a few moments.  This is the true gift of dance.  You enter into a protective bubble where work, the news and your expiring vehicle registration all get left at the door. Two hours a week of moving mediation - time well spent.

The way I dance is through interior design.  It’s how I let go and enjoy. It’s what I throw myself into during times when life gets hard.  This is a wonderful gauge.  When life gets hard, what art or activity do you turn to?  What gets you through?  Chances are you are a good dancer in whatever this thing is.

Ok, so what does this have to do with Happy Eyes.  Happy Eyes is a co-creation process.  The job of Happy Eyes is to provide a framework and process for the client to dance.  To enjoy the process of creating a home – their sacred place and largest financial investment.  The framework provides just the right amount of structure and stability while also allows for flow, creativity and self-expression.  I never thought that a dance class would completely reframe how I define leadership.  What are the most important aspects of Zouk? Connection, stability, keeping to the beat of the music, listening to your partner, and enjoying the dance.

My question for you, is how do you dance?  It’s probably how you excel at work or whatever hobby you gravitate towards.  I saw a friend last week who has always loved knitting.  Now she is teaching a Wednesday night knitting group in her neighborhood that has 12 other women.  How beautiful is that?  That’s how she dances and now 12 other women get to dance, too, thanks to her leadership.

Creating a home isn’t just about finishes and furniture—it’s about building the kind of “dance floor” that supports how you live, work, and recharge, so you can move through the next 5–15 years with more ease, clarity, and joy. If you’re longing for a home that feels like you and sets you up for what’s next, book a Discovery Call and let’s co-create it together.

Now go forth and dance, my friends.

Unfamiliar with Zouk?  Here is the gold-standard (extremely advanced level!) video called Spirit Bird.  Enjoy!
